You do not need to watch charts at 3am. This guide builds the 4-layer system that monitors your EA for you — so you wake up to a 5-minute review, not a crisis.
24-Hour EA Activity Timeline (UTC)
Built from the bottom up. Each layer protects the layer above it. You only need to engage with Layer 4.
Layer 4 — You (Morning check)
5 minutes in the morning. Confirm everything ran correctly, review overnight trades, check for any alerts that fired. This is your only required action.
Layer 3 — MT5 Mobile Alerts
Your phone receives push notifications if AutoTrading turns off, if the daily loss limit is hit, or if MT5 loses connection to the broker. You can act immediately from your phone without needing a computer.
Layer 2 — EA Built-in Limits
Daily loss limit stops the EA if the account loses 3–5% in one day. Spread filter skips trades when spreads spike above threshold. Session window keeps the EA inactive outside its designed trading hours.
Layer 1 — VPS Foundation
A Windows VPS keeps MT5 running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No power cuts, no internet drops, no computer sleeping. The EA runs continuously whether you are awake or not.
The system works bottom-up. VPS keeps MT5 running. EA limits protect the account. Mobile alerts tell you if limits are hit. You review in the morning. You never need to be awake.
Most traders approach overnight EA monitoring backwards. They think it means watching the EA while they are awake — staying up until 2am to see what the Asian session does, setting alarms every 2 hours to check positions. This approach negates the entire value of running an EA and introduces fatigue-driven decisions.
The correct approach is to build a system that monitors for you. The 4-layer system above does exactly this: the VPS keeps everything running, the EA's own limits prevent runaway losses, mobile alerts notify you only if something requires your attention, and the morning check confirms everything went as planned. When the system is properly set up, there is nothing to do between going to sleep and the 5-minute morning check. For remote monitoring during daytime hours, see our remote monitoring guide.
A Virtual Private Server is a Windows cloud computer that you rent for $10–$20 per month and access remotely. MT5 runs on the VPS 24 hours a day, connected to your broker. When you sleep, your VPS keeps running. When your internet goes down, your VPS keeps running. When your computer shuts down for a software update, your VPS keeps running.
Recommended VPS specifications: Windows Server 2019 or 2022, 2GB RAM minimum (4GB preferred if running multiple MT5 instances), 60GB SSD storage, data centre location in London or New York (lower latency to major brokers). Providers include Contabo, Vultr, Forex VPS, and MT5 VPS services offered by some brokers directly.
Install MT5 on the VPS, log into your broker account, and attach the EA to your chart exactly as you would on a local machine. The difference is that the VPS runs indefinitely without shutdown. Access it via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from any device — Windows, Mac, or your phone.
The EA's own configuration is the second layer of protection. Three parameters are critical for safe overnight operation:
Daily Loss Limit (3–5%)
When the account loses this percentage in a single trading day, the EA stops taking new trades until the next trading day (00:00 server time). This is the most important overnight safety parameter. Set it in the EA input parameters — most Pro-Scalper EAs have this as a configurable input.
Spread Filter
The EA checks the current spread before every trade entry. If the spread exceeds the configured threshold (e.g. 15 points for XAUUSD), the trade is skipped. During Asian session thin liquidity and news events, spreads on XAUUSD can spike to 30–50 points — the spread filter prevents entries at these inflated costs.
Session Window
Restricts trading to specific UTC hours. A London-session EA configured to trade from 07:00 to 11:00 UTC will not take trades at 02:00 UTC, even if a technical signal would have triggered. This prevents the EA from trading during periods with insufficient liquidity for its strategy type.
MT5 mobile push notifications are free and take 2 minutes to configure. They send push notifications directly to the MetaTrader 5 app on your phone — audible even when your phone is on silent if you configure priority notifications.
Setup: In MT5 desktop, go to Tools, then Options, then Notifications. Enable push notifications. Enter your MetaQuotes ID (visible in the MetaTrader 5 mobile app under Settings, then Messages). Test the connection by clicking Send test notification.
What to alert on: AutoTrading enabled/disabled (if the EA stops running, you need to know), daily loss limit reached (the EA stopped itself — you need to review tomorrow), connection lost to broker (very rare on a quality VPS, but worth alerting).
Most nights, zero alerts fire. An alert means something specific happened and you can decide whether to act (check your phone, open RDP, review the journal) or wait for the morning check. The overnight monitoring framework from this guide and the daytime XAUUSD automation guide together give you the full 24/5 coverage picture.
Is MT5 running?
Open VPS via Remote Desktop or check MT5 mobile. Confirm the EA smiley icon in the top-right of the chart is present and not crossed out. If crossed out, AutoTrading was disabled — check the journal for the reason.
What trades happened overnight?
Open Account History in MT5 or check Myfxbook app. Were entry times within the session window? Were lot sizes correct? Did all closed trades have SL set at entry? Anything more than 3 losses in a row overnight warrants a journal review.
Check the journal
In MT5, go to View, then Terminal, then Journal. Look for any warning or error messages with exclamation marks. Common entries to investigate: "expert removed", "connection timeout", "trade context busy".
Any alerts triggered?
Review overnight push notifications on your phone. If the daily loss limit fired, confirm the EA has stopped and review the account history to understand what triggered it. If AutoTrading disabled alert fired, investigate the reason before re-enabling.
All normal? No action needed.
If steps 1–4 are clear, the system worked as designed. The EA ran, the limits protected the account, no alerts required your attention. Start your day.
VPS disconnect
MT5 alert fires when connection to broker is lost. VPS uptime guarantees from reputable providers are 99.9% or higher.
Daily loss runaway
EA daily loss limit stops trading automatically at 3–5% equity loss. No manual intervention required.
Spread spike entries
Spread filter skips all trades when live spread exceeds threshold. Prevents costly entries during thin Asian session.
EA accidentally disabled
MT5 push notification alerts when AutoTrading status changes. You know within seconds.
News event damage
Session window keeps EA inactive during off-hours. Extraordinary events should be manually disabled — see our guide on extraordinary event protocol.
Missing SL on trades
All Pro-Scalper EAs set SL on every trade at entry. There are no naked positions overnight.
A well-configured 4-layer system eliminates an entire category of actions that many new EA traders think are necessary:
Forex markets close on Friday at approximately 22:00 UTC and reopen on Sunday at 22:00 UTC. XAUUSD follows the same schedule. Over the weekend, the EA cannot trade (the market is closed), but you should follow a brief weekend protocol:
Friday Evening
Sunday Evening
