3 methods to pause your EA during SpaceX IPOs, NFP, FOMC, and black swan events — from 10-second manual disable to always-on automated protection.

Regular trading day, minor economic data releases
The question names SpaceX specifically, and it is worth understanding why. A SpaceX IPO — at the scale it would likely occur — would be a financial event of extraordinary scope. SpaceX's valuation estimates have ranged above $200 billion, making it potentially one of the largest IPOs in history. Events at this scale create cross-market capital flows that directly impact safe-haven assets like gold.
The mechanism: when a major IPO prices and lists, institutional investors who have been allocated shares sell other assets to fund their IPO purchases. Safe-haven assets like gold are often among the first to see outflows as risk appetite increases ("risk-on" environment). The XAUUSD may drop sharply in the hours around a major IPO listing as gold is sold and equities are bought. Conversely, if the IPO fails or prices below expectations, a "risk-off" flight to safety pushes gold higher.
A gold EA running its normal breakout strategy during this period may generate false signals in either direction — entering a position based on a range breakout that is actually driven by IPO flow rather than session mechanics. The correct response is not panic — it is a measured 30–60 minute pause around the key IPO announcement moment. For broader context on how geopolitical and macro events affect gold, see our geopolitical events guide.
Event categories determine which pause method is appropriate. Getting this right means you use the correct tool rather than pausing when you should not — or failing to pause when you should.
NFP, FOMC, CPI, ECB rate decision, UK GDP, US PPI, OPEC meeting
These appear on the economic calendar with exact timing. Configure the news filter once and it handles them automatically for every future occurrence.
Unexpected geopolitical escalation, surprise central bank emergency meeting, major company earnings miss causing broad risk-off, SpaceX IPO announced same day
Cannot be automated. These require you to see the news, assess the risk level, and manually disable AutoTrading if the event rises to HIGH or EXTREME level.
Applies to any event — the EA stops itself if daily losses exceed the threshold
This is not event-specific — it is always-on protection. Even if you miss an unscheduled event and forget to pause manually, the daily loss limit caps the maximum damage of any single bad day.
Step-by-Step
Manual Disable (fastest — 10 seconds)
For unexpected eventsOpen MT5 on desktop or mobile app
Click the green "AutoTrading" button in the toolbar (it turns grey)
Confirm: all EA activity stops immediately — existing trades remain, no new trades will open
To resume: click the grey "AutoTrading" button (turns green again)
Best for
This is the correct method for SpaceX IPO, unexpected geopolitical escalation, or any high-volatility event that was not on your calendar. Takes 10 seconds from any device.
Limitation
Requires you to remember to re-enable it manually. Forgetting to re-enable can cause missed trading opportunities.
News Filter (automatic — set once)
For scheduled eventsRight-click the chart where your EA is running → Expert Advisors → Properties
Navigate to the Inputs tab
Find the NewsFilter (or PauseBeforeNews / AvoidNews) parameter and set to TRUE
Set PauseMinutes parameter to 30 (pauses EA 30 min before and after scheduled news)
Click OK — the EA now automatically pauses around scheduled events
Best for
This handles CPI, NFP, FOMC, and other scheduled economic releases automatically. Set it once and it runs every time.
Limitation
Does not help with unscheduled events (SpaceX IPO announcement, banking shock, surprise rate decision). Must be combined with manual disable for unscheduled events.
Daily Loss Limit (protective — automatic safeguard)
Always-on protectionRight-click chart → Expert Advisors → Properties → Inputs
Find DailyLossLimit or MaxDailyLoss parameter
Set to 3–5% of your account balance (e.g. $30–$50 for a $1,000 account)
Click OK — the EA automatically disables itself if this limit is hit in a day
The EA reactivates at the start of the next trading day automatically
Best for
Not a pause — a safeguard. The EA stops itself if the day goes badly regardless of cause. This is the most important parameter for protection against extraordinary events you did not anticipate.
Limitation
Does not prevent initial losses — it caps them. The EA may lose up to the daily limit before disabling. Set at a level you can comfortably absorb (3% of account maximum recommended).
Proactive event management is faster than reactive intervention. The morning routine takes 3 minutes and eliminates most surprise pausing situations:
Check economic calendar (Investing.com, Forex Factory, or ForexLive)
Filter for today. Look for HIGH-impact events (★★★) specifically affecting USD, gold, or major economies. Note the time in GMT/your local timezone.
Categorise today's risk level
No high-impact events = NORMAL. 1–2 scheduled events = ELEVATED (check news filter is active). FOMC/NFP/emergency news = HIGH (consider manual pause around event time). Black swan developing = EXTREME (disable EA, monitor).
Confirm EA configuration
Open MT5. Confirm AutoTrading is ON (green), EA panel shows no errors, news filter is active if appropriate. This confirmation takes 30 seconds. Then close the app and trade normally.
For more on how often to perform this check and what the broader monitoring routine looks like, see our EA monitoring guide. How gold behaves during high-volatility events is also covered in our chart monitoring guide.
The opposite problem is also real: traders who pause their EA for any volatility, including the normal intraday swings that are simply part of XAUUSD trading. Over-pausing creates exactly the same problem as over-monitoring — every pause is a gap in the statistical sequence, each gap changes the expected outcome, and a trader who pauses frequently will never see the full edge of their EA.
The threshold that warrants a pause is clear: events that could produce 3–5% single-day moves in XAUUSD (which is 45–75 USD on a 1,500+ gold price). Normal XAUUSD daily range of 150–250 pips is not a pause trigger — it is normal business. Even a 1% down day (15 USD) is within the EA's normal operating parameters. The daily loss limit handles the cases where normal drawdown becomes abnormal.
Most drawdowns that prompt a trader to consider pausing resolve within 24–48 hours. The exception is a structural market shift (gold enters a multi-week compressed range after an extraordinary event). That scenario is not handled by pausing for 30 minutes — it is handled by the monitoring routine that identifies when performance has degraded enough over multiple weeks to warrant an EA update review.
