The exact 4-checkpoint weekly routine — what to look at, how long it takes, and why checking more often actually reduces your returns.

The short answer
Check your gold EA 4 times per week — 23 minutes total.
The rest of the time: your VPS + MT5 mobile alerts do the monitoring for you.
The question "how often should you check on your EA?" hides a critical distinction. Checking is an active, scheduled review of specific operational metrics. Watching is passive, continuous observation of live price action and trades as they unfold. These produce opposite outcomes.
Checking four times per week for 23 minutes total gives you complete operational oversight. You know whether the EA is running, trading at the right frequency, and performing within expected parameters. You make zero emotional decisions because the checks are structured — if the checklist passes, you close the app.
Watching your EA continuously does the opposite. Watching means seeing a trade open and wondering if you should close it early. It means seeing a losing streak mid-week and questioning whether the EA is broken. It means making decisions in real time, with incomplete information, under emotional pressure. Every trader who has done this knows where it ends: closed trades before the recovery, adjusted parameters mid-sequence, and a month of self-interference that outperformed the losses the EA would have had on its own.
For how often to check the charts themselves (for manual context, not EA monitoring), that is a different question covered in our XAUUSD chart checking guide. This guide is specifically about the EA's operational health — whether it is running, trading, and performing correctly.
The routine below is designed for any gold EA running on a VPS — including Goldie Sniper EA PRO, Goldie Razor V2, Blind Sniper X PRO, and Hybrid Manual Scalper Pro. Timings assume MT5 mobile app access.
Is MT5 running? Is AutoTrading green? Is the VPS connection live? Did any trades fire on Friday close that are still open? These 3 checks take 90 seconds and tell you everything about whether the week will proceed normally. Open the MT5 mobile app, look for the green AutoTrading icon, confirm the EA panel shows no errors. That is your Monday check done.
Are trades happening at expected frequency? Open your MT5 account history and count trades since Monday. Compare to your EA's typical weekly range. If Goldie Sniper averages 8–12 trades per week and you see 0 by Wednesday noon London time, something may be wrong — check the News Filter settings and the spread filter threshold. If you see the right number of trades, close the app and do nothing.
Are any trades still open heading into the weekend? Most gold EAs close positions before the Friday close to avoid weekend gap risk. Verify: no open trades, EA is still running (will restart Monday), no margin warnings. If you have open trades at 21:00 GMT Friday and your EA is supposed to close before weekend, this is the one moment where a manual check prevents a gap-related loss.
Weekly review: total trades, total P&L, average win/loss, maximum drawdown this week. Compare against your 30-day trailing average. If this week is more than 30% below your trailing average, make a note — one week is data, not signal. If three consecutive weeks are below 50% of your historical average, that becomes the first signal to investigate further. This is also when you check for EA updates from the developer.
Every check produces one of two outcomes: "all normal — no action" or "something requires attention." The second category is rarer than most traders expect. Understanding the action threshold separates operators who let their EA perform from those who interfere with it.
Act immediately if you see:
Wait and observe (do NOT act) if you see:
The items in the right column feel urgent in the moment. They are not. A trade in drawdown has a stop-loss. The EA's SL was set based on the strategy's edge — overriding it based on a momentary equity reading is replacing structured risk management with emotional risk management. The EA will recover trades within its statistical edge. Your job during a check that reveals a losing period is to verify operational health, note the performance deviation, and close the app.
For guidance on when a performance deviation is large enough to investigate further — and whether it is a signal to update your EA — the threshold is three consecutive weeks below 50% of your historical average, not one bad week.
The 4-checkpoint weekly routine is the steady-state operation. Three scenarios justify temporarily moving to daily checks:
1. First 30 days of live deployment
When you first go live with a gold EA, you are validating that the real account behaves as the demo did — spread conditions match, execution quality is acceptable, AutoTrading persists through VPS reboots. Daily checks for the first month give you confidence that the foundation is sound. After 30 days of confirmed normal behaviour, drop back to weekly.
2. After an EA version update
Any time you install a new version of your EA, the first two weeks require daily monitoring. You are confirming the new version behaves as the developer's release notes describe — same trade frequency, same risk parameters, no unexpected behaviour. If something diverges from expectation, you want to catch it within days, not weeks.
3. During extraordinary market conditions
Banking system shocks, emergency central bank rate changes, geopolitical escalations that are moving gold by 3–5% in hours — these justify daily and potentially intraday checking. Not watching, but a quick 2-minute check at the start of each session (Asia open, London open, NY open) to confirm the EA is not caught on the wrong side of an unusual move. Once conditions normalise, return to weekly.
The correct mental model for EA monitoring is: the EA (via MT5 alerts) calls you when something is wrong, not the other way around. You check in four times per week to confirm everything is running. In between, MT5 push notifications to your phone handle any genuine emergency.
AutoTrading state change
CriticalTools → Options → Notifications. Enable push. MT5 sends a notification if AutoTrading changes state (turned off unexpectedly — VPS reboot, power cut, broker disconnection).
Broker connection lost
CriticalMT5 already sends this alert by default in the mobile app when connection to your broker drops. Verify push notifications are enabled in MT5 mobile settings.
Daily equity threshold
HighUse MetaTrader's built-in Alarm feature (Tools → Alerts) to alert when equity drops below 70% of balance. This catches a bad day before it becomes a blown account.
Weekend open position
MediumSet a Friday 20:45 GMT calendar reminder to do your Friday check. This is the one check where you cannot rely on the EA to call you — you need to confirm no positions are open before the weekend gap.
Understanding what constitutes a healthy EA operationally — the specific panels and metrics to review during each check — takes the guesswork out of what you are looking for.
Case Studies
Three scenarios — animated to show the downstream consequences of each monitoring approach.
Outcome:
Missed ~36 trades at typical Goldie Sniper frequency. Potentially $180–$360 in lost profit on a $1,000 account at conservative sizing.
Daily or intraday checking creates a specific cognitive trap. When you see an open trade in drawdown, your brain classifies it as a problem that needs solving. The EA's logic classifies it as a trade within its statistical parameters — expected, priced in, and with a defined exit. The human instinct is to close early and prevent further loss. The EA's design is to hold to the stop-loss because early exits destroy the win-rate and average win/loss ratio that make the strategy profitable.
Weekly structured checks largely prevent this trap. By Monday, a Friday trade that was in drawdown has either hit its stop-loss or recovered. You never see the intraday pain — only the outcome. This is not ignorance; it is correct information management. You are reviewing the relevant data (did the week perform within parameters?) rather than the irrelevant data (is this specific trade uncomfortable right now?).
The over-monitoring trap is also self-reinforcing: traders who check frequently make more changes, each change resets the EA's edge, and the degraded performance then seems to justify even more checking and changing. The correct exit from this loop is not another parameter change — it is a return to the structured weekly check routine with a 30-day no-intervention commitment.
Here is what the weekly routine actually costs in time versus what continuous watching costs in performance:
23 min
Weekly check time
4 structured checks per week
92 min
Monthly check time
Under 2 hours of active review per month
4+ hrs
Avg. over-monitor time
Daily watchers spend 4+ hours/week looking without improving results
