Remote Monitoring

How to Monitor Your XAUUSD Expert Advisor Remotely

Remote monitoring is different from overnight monitoring — you can act remotely during the day. This guide covers the 4 tools that give you full visibility and control from your phone, anywhere. The overnight watch system is covered separately in our overnight monitoring guide.

MetaTrader Mobile (iOS/Android)

Connecting...

Latency: Real-time

Live trades, account balance, P&L, open positions, close trades manually

Setup: 5 minutes — download app, add your broker server, login

Limitation: Cannot turn AutoTrading on or off from mobile

Myfxbook Live Account

Connecting...

Latency: 15-min delay (free) or real-time (paid)

Performance dashboard, trade history, gain/loss charts, drawdown tracking

Setup: 15 minutes — connect via MT4/MT5 expert or API

Limitation: Read-only — cannot control the EA from Myfxbook

VPS Remote Desktop (RDP)

Connecting...

Latency: Real-time — full MT5 access

Full MT5 desktop access from any device — can change parameters, restart EA, check journal

Setup: 10 minutes — Windows RDP from phone app or browser

Limitation: Requires mobile data; some corporate networks block RDP port 3389

MT5 Push Notifications

Connecting...

Latency: Instant (push to phone)

Alerts when: trade opened, trade closed, daily loss threshold, AutoTrading turned off

Setup: 2 minutes — enable in MetaQuotes ID settings

Limitation: Alerts only — no control from notification

Decision Point

All normal: no action needed. Something unusual: open RDP to access full MT5 and investigate via journal.

Remote vs Overnight: Two Different Use Cases

Remote monitoring is for the daytime — when you are commuting, at work, at the gym, or at lunch. During these periods you cannot access your home computer, but you can check on the EA from your phone. Crucially, you can also act: you can close a trade manually from MT5 mobile, or access the full MT5 via VPS RDP to change parameters or check the journal.

Overnight monitoring is different: while you are asleep, you cannot act — so the system must act for you (VPS, EA limits, and alerts). This guide covers the daytime remote case. The automated overnight watch system is in our overnight monitoring guide.

Tool 1 — MT5 Mobile App Deep Dive

The MetaTrader 5 mobile app (iOS and Android, free) is the primary remote monitoring tool for most EA traders. It gives you real-time account data identical to what you see in MT5 desktop.

Setup: Download the app, tap the account icon, then "Manage Accounts", then add a new account. Search for your broker's server name (e.g. "ICMarkets-Live", "Pepperstone-Demo"), enter your MT5 account number and password. The app connects in seconds.

What you can do from mobile: View account balance, equity, margin, and free margin in real time. View all open trades with entry price, SL, TP, and floating P&L. Close any individual trade manually (long-press the trade row). View complete trade history. Set price alerts for key levels.

What you cannot do: Enable or disable AutoTrading (the master switch). Change EA input parameters. Review the EA journal. These actions require full MT5 access via VPS Remote Desktop. For complete automation that minimises how often you need the RDP, our XAUUSD automation guide covers the full picture.

Tool 2 — Myfxbook Live Account Setup

Myfxbook is a third-party performance tracking platform that connects to your MT5 account and displays detailed analytics in a browser-based dashboard and mobile app. Unlike MT5 mobile (which shows current positions and recent history), Myfxbook specialises in performance analytics: gain/loss charts, profit factor calculations, monthly breakdowns, and drawdown history.

Connection method: Create a free Myfxbook account, then go to Portfolio, Add Account. Download the Myfxbook expert advisor for MT5, attach it to any chart on your MT5 instance (on your VPS), and enter your Myfxbook email and password in the EA settings. The EA sends anonymised account data to Myfxbook servers every 15 minutes. Verify the connection in your Myfxbook dashboard.

What to check in the Myfxbook mobile app during a remote check: Daily gain/loss bar (is today green or red?), current equity vs balance (large gap indicates significant floating trades), the 30-day equity curve (is it generally rising, flat, or falling?). The performance scorecard for interpreting these numbers is in our XAUUSD EA performance guide.

Tool 3 — VPS Remote Desktop

VPS Remote Desktop (RDP) gives you a full Windows desktop on your phone screen. Everything you can do in MT5 on your desktop computer, you can do via RDP from your phone. This includes changing EA parameters, reviewing the journal, enabling or disabling AutoTrading, and running reports.

Setup: Download "Microsoft Remote Desktop" from the App Store or Google Play (free). Tap the plus button and select "Add PC". Enter your VPS IP address (found in your VPS control panel). Enter the Windows username (usually "Administrator") and your VPS Windows password. Tap save, then tap the PC to connect.

The connection uses cellular data or wifi and feels slightly slower than using a local computer, but is fully functional for all MT5 operations. Most corporate wifi networks allow RDP connections. If your workplace blocks port 3389 (the default RDP port), ask your VPS provider about alternative port configurations.

RDP is the escalation tool — use it only when MT5 mobile or Myfxbook show something that requires investigation. For the routine daily check, MT5 mobile is sufficient.

Tool 4 — MT5 Push Notifications Setup

Push notifications transform the MT5 mobile app from a passive viewer into an active alert system. Instead of checking the app manually, the app notifies you when specific events occur.

Setup in MT5 Desktop: Go to Tools, then Options, then Notifications. Check "Enable push notifications". Find your MetaQuotes ID in the MT5 mobile app under Settings, then Messages — it is a 8-character alphanumeric code. Enter it in the desktop settings. Click "Test" to send a test notification to your phone.

Recommended alerts to configure: Trade opened (confirm the EA is executing), trade closed (monitor activity), and — most importantly — custom EA alerts for your daily loss limit threshold and AutoTrading status changes. These are configured in the EA's input parameters, not in the standard MT5 alert system. Review your specific EA's documentation for the push notification parameters.

When to Escalate: Remote Check vs RDP Intervention

No action needed — remote check only

  • Balance within expected range for time of day
  • Open trades have SL set and correct lot sizes
  • History shows entries within session window
  • Myfxbook daily bar is green or slightly negative
  • No push notification alerts fired

Escalate to RDP — investigate now

  • !Account balance significantly below expected (more than normal daily loss range)
  • !Push notification for AutoTrading disabled fired
  • !EA appears to have stopped trading during active session
  • !Open trade with no SL visible in Trades tab
  • !3 or more consecutive losses in a short window

Automation That Reduces Remote Monitoring Needs

Proper EA configuration dramatically reduces how much remote checking is necessary. A well-configured EA with a daily loss limit, spread filter, and session window is self-managing. On most trading days, the 3-minute remote check yields five green confirmations and requires zero further action.

The monitoring frequency that most EA traders settle into is: one brief morning check (5 minutes), one midday remote check (3 minutes), and one evening review (5 minutes). Total: 13 minutes per day for complete awareness of the EA's activity. How often to check is covered in our monitoring frequency guide.

The automation that enables this low-touch monitoring is not complex — it is the VPS (uptime), the daily loss limit (loss control), the spread filter (execution quality), and the session window (timing discipline). These four features together constitute the automated management layer that keeps the EA within parameters without human intervention.
