NFP Survival Protocol
The answer is entirely determined by 5 configuration decisions made before the event. All 5 correct: your EA survives and may even capture post-NFP momentum. Any missing: significant loss is likely.

High probability of significant loss on next NFP Friday — urgent configuration review needed before the first Friday of next month
Non-Farm Payrolls is the US monthly employment report — the number of jobs added outside the agricultural sector in the previous month. It is released at 13:30 UTC on the first Friday of every month. For gold traders, it is the most consistently dangerous scheduled event of the month.
The danger window starts at approximately 13:25 UTC, when spread begins widening as liquidity providers pull tighter quotes to protect themselves from the imminent high-uncertainty event. By 13:29 UTC, XAUUSD spread on most ECN brokers has widened to 15–40 pips (from the normal 0–3 pips). On some brokers, spread reaches 40–80 pips in the final 30 seconds before release.
At 13:30:00 UTC, the number is released. If the actual differs significantly from market consensus (e.g., consensus: +200k jobs, actual: +320k — a 120k upside surprise), gold typically moves 80–150 pips within the first 10–30 seconds, then may continue in the same direction or partially retrace over the following 10–20 minutes. The spread normalises to near-normal levels within 5–10 minutes after release. What NFP does to your EA in real time on a minute-by-minute basis is shown in our NFP failure case study.
Other high-impact events (FOMC, CPI, GDP) are also dangerous, but NFP is uniquely problematic for gold scalping EAs for 3 reasons. First, NFP releases on a Friday, when some EA traders have relaxed their monitoring habits. Weekend proximity creates complacency. Second, gold's high daily range means the absolute pip value of an NFP spike is very large — a 150-pip adverse move on 0.1 lot XAUUSD costs $150, which is 3% of a $5,000 account. Third, the spread widening before NFP is more severe for gold than for most major forex pairs, making entry cost during the danger window exceptionally high.
The combination of high pre-event spread, large potential directional move, and Friday complacency makes NFP Friday the most common single event responsible for significant EA account losses in retail gold trading. Understanding this is not to frighten — it is to motivate the 5-decision configuration protocol that makes NFP survivable and even exploitable.
How news events rank by gold price impact across all 10 major releases is covered in our news impact guide.
A news filter in an MT5 EA typically works by one of two methods: hardcoded daily windows (the EA simply does not trade on the first Friday of each month between 13:00–14:30 UTC, regardless of events) or calendar-connected filtering (the EA connects to an economic calendar API, downloads upcoming high-impact events, and automatically pauses during defined windows around those events).
For the calendar-connected approach to work correctly, the EA requires: internet connection from the MT5 VPS, correct GMT offset settings (must match your broker's server time zone), and the calendar source must be accessible (some corporate firewalls or VPS providers block outbound API calls). If you are uncertain whether your EA's news filter is working, test it: look at the MT5 Journal tab after any FOMC or CPI release and search for "news filter" or "pause" entries. If no such entries appear, the filter may not be functioning.
The spread filter setting for Goldie Razor and how it interacts with the news filter is in our Goldie Razor settings guide, which covers MaxSpread, session windows, and the parameters most important for news-event protection.
The most reliable NFP protection protocol does not rely solely on EA configuration — it involves a brief manual intervention 60–90 minutes before the event. This takes 10 minutes and eliminates most NFP risk regardless of EA configuration.
Step 1 (12:20 UTC): Check Myfxbook economic calendar or Investing.com to confirm NFP is releasing today at 13:30 UTC. Note the consensus forecast. Step 2 (12:30 UTC): Open MT5, review all open positions. For any position in profit, consider closing at market to lock in gains — or at minimum, tighten SL to break-even plus a few pips. Step 3 (12:35 UTC): Confirm EA news filter is active. Check Journal tab for evidence the EA has recognised the upcoming event. Step 4 (12:45 UTC): Cancel any pending orders that would trigger near the current price before 13:30 UTC. Step 5 (13:00 UTC): If uncertain about news filter status, manually pause the EA (right-click chart → EA → Disable). Set a reminder to re-enable at 14:00 UTC.
This 10-minute routine on the first Friday of each month eliminates the most common NFP loss scenarios. It costs nothing except 10 minutes of attention. The alternative — ignoring NFP and trusting EA configuration alone — is responsible for a significant percentage of single-event account damage in retail gold EA trading.
If your current EA has no news filter parameter, the manual intervention approach is your safety net. The process: identify NFP Friday at the start of each month (check the Forex Factory calendar for the red "NFP" event on the first Friday). At 12:30 UTC on that Friday, manually disable the EA in MT5: right-click the EA icon on the chart (top-right of the chart) → select "Disable Expert Advisor." The EA will stop taking new trades immediately but any open positions remain active and their SL/TP remains valid.
At 14:00–14:30 UTC (when spread has normalised and any immediate post-NFP volatility has subsided), re-enable the EA: right-click the EA icon → "Enable Expert Advisor." The EA resumes its normal session trading logic. This manual process adds 2 minutes of effort on the first Friday of each month and eliminates the primary NFP risk for EAs without built-in news filtering.
For Goldie Razor V2.8.4 specifically, the Friday session window parameter is a built-in protection mechanism: by setting the EA's trading end time to 12:00 UTC on Fridays, the EA stops taking new entries well before the NFP danger window, eliminating exposure without requiring manual intervention. This parameter setting should be considered mandatory for all Goldie Razor users.
