Why Local Time Still Matters with an Automated EA

A common question from new EA traders: if the EA runs automatically, why does my timezone matter at all? The answer is that automation handles execution, but not oversight. You still need to review trade results, adjust parameters, monitor drawdown, intervene during unusual conditions, and keep track of whether the EA is behaving correctly. All of these require you to be awake and engaged at some point during the trading day.

For traders in unfavourable timezones, the EA might run through the night and produce its full week of trades before you review a single one. This isn't inherently bad — it's what VPS-based automation is designed for — but it means your oversight happens asynchronously. You review results the next morning, not in real time. This requires more discipline around reviewing daily trade logs and more confidence in your EA's risk settings, because you won't be there to manually intervene if something goes sideways at 3am your time.

Configuring Broker Time vs UTC

This is where timezone management becomes practically important for EA setup. Your EA's session filter is configured in broker server time — not UTC, not your local time. If your broker is on GMT+2 server time and you want the EA to trade London session (08:00–17:00 UTC), you need to set the session filter to 10:00–19:00 in your EA (broker server time = UTC + 2).

Always verify your broker's server time. In MT5, look at the time shown in the bottom right of the platform — this is broker server time. Compare it to current UTC. The difference is your broker's offset. Many EAs display this as "Server Time" in their settings panel or logs.

Second, it provides low-latency order execution — a VPS in London can be 5–15ms from your broker's server versus 80–200ms from a home connection in Asia or the US. For gold scalping, this latency difference matters. Third, it provides a clean, dedicated environment — no background processes, no updates, no accidental closures of MT5 on a PC you're also using for other things.

For European traders whose peak sessions align with business hours, the VPS's primary value is reliability rather than timing. The EA needs to stay running through the trading day even if your internet cuts out briefly — the VPS handles this. The additional latency benefit is smaller since many European VPS providers are already well-connected to major broker servers.

Daylight Saving: The Annual Timezone Headache

Twice a year, clocks change in major trading zones — March/April for most of the Northern Hemisphere, October/November for most of the Southern Hemisphere. These changes affect which UTC hours your local windows correspond to, which hours brokers' servers shift (if their jurisdiction observes DST), and whether your EA's configured session times still match your intended UTC windows.

The checklist after any DST change: (1) Verify your broker's server time offset has or hasn't changed. (2) Check the EA's session filter — does it still align with the London open and NY open in UTC? (3) Watch the first few Monday trades of the post-DST week to confirm the EA trades at the expected times. EU daylight saving and US daylight saving happen on different dates, which creates a brief 2–3 week window each year where the offset between London and New York changes — potentially affecting the overlap window your EA is capturing.
