Why 07:00–17:00 UTC Is the Standard Active Window

Most professional automated gold trading systems use a session window between 07:00 and 17:00–20:00 UTC. This window captures the full London trading day plus the initial New York session. During this period, XAUUSD benefits from the participation of institutional gold dealers in both London (LBMA market) and New York (COMEX futures), creating the deepest liquidity and tightest spreads of the trading day.

The London gold price benchmarks (LBMA Gold Price AM and PM) occur at 10:30 and 15:00 London time (approximately 09:30 and 14:00 UTC). These benchmarks are used as reference prices by central banks, ETFs, mining companies, and large institutions — their publication often triggers brief but significant order flow as parties adjust positions to the newly published benchmark. EAs running during these windows will experience this natural liquidity burst.

Goldie Razor V2.8.4 defaults to a session window of 07:00–20:00 broker time. The exact hours depend on your broker's server timezone (usually UTC+2 or UTC+3), but the intent is to cover the London open through the New York afternoon — capturing both peak windows while closing well before the thin Asian session begins.

Why the Asian Session Is Problematic for Gold EAs

The Asian session for XAUUSD (roughly 21:00–07:00 UTC) is characterised by lower volume, wider spreads, and less predictable price action. This does not mean XAUUSD never moves during Asian hours — it does, sometimes significantly, particularly when Australian data, Chinese PMI, or Japanese economic events create cross-market flows. But the volume from retail and institutional gold trading desks is a fraction of what it is during European and US hours.

For automated EAs, the Asian session creates two specific problems: (1) wider spreads mean that even when the EA identifies a valid setup, the cost of entry is higher relative to the target, reducing expected value; (2) the reduced liquidity means that large price moves when they do occur are more likely to be erratic and quickly reversed, producing false breakout signals that a breakout EA may chase. The session filter in your EA settings is specifically designed to avoid these conditions — verify it is active and set to exclude the Asian session hours.

The Friday 21:00 UTC Hard Cutoff

Every Friday, the gold market closes at approximately 21:00–22:00 UTC and does not reopen until Sunday at approximately 21:00 UTC. During this 47–48 hour closure, world events continue — geopolitical developments, Central Bank communications, economic data from non-Western time zones, and macroeconomic shifts can all occur without the market having an opportunity to price them in.

The result is the "Sunday gap" — the opening price on Sunday can differ significantly from the Friday close. Gaps of 30–100 pips are common; during major geopolitical events, gaps of 200+ pips have occurred. If an EA has an open position over the weekend, the Sunday gap bypasses the stop-loss entirely — the first fill may be at the opening price, which is already past the stop level. This is known as slippage on gap open. The solution is simple: configure your EA to close all positions by Friday 21:00 UTC, or use the weekly session filter if the EA has one.
