Weeks like this require 4 setting adjustments before Tuesday open
Three high-impact events in 3 days โ FOMC, CPI, and NFP. Each one can produce 100+ pip moves on XAUUSD within minutes of release. Standard EA settings are not calibrated for this level of market disruption.
The 4 Required Adjustments
Reduce Lot Size by 30โ50%
High-impact events produce wider spreads and larger-than-normal adverse moves. A position sized for normal conditions will experience disproportionate drawdown during the event window. Reducing by 30โ50% keeps the dollar risk in line with the elevated uncertainty.
How to change in MT5
In MT5: right-click the EA on chart โ Expert Advisors โ Properties. Reduce the Lot Size input parameter. Apply and confirm. Change it back to normal after the event week passes + 24 hours.
Tighten Spread Filter to 12 Pips
During news events, broker spreads on XAUUSD can widen from a normal 10โ15 pips to 50โ300 pips within seconds. An EA without a tight spread filter will attempt to enter at these widened spreads and open at a massive immediate loss even if the direction is correct.
How to change in MT5
Change the spread filter from the default 18 pips to 12 pips. This means the EA will only enter when spread is tight โ which effectively blocks entries during the most volatile event windows automatically.
Enable News Pause
30 minutes before and 30 minutes after a high-impact release, price action is driven by market makers repositioning and stop-hunting rather than directional breakout logic. The EA's edge does not apply during this window โ it is effectively trying to trade random noise.
How to change in MT5
If your EA has a news filter, enable it with a 30-minute window. If not, manually disable the EA (remove from chart or use the Auto Trading toggle) from 30 minutes before the scheduled event time until 30 minutes after.
Friday Cutoff at 20:00 UTC
On NFP Fridays, markets often remain volatile through the afternoon session with conflicting interpretations of the data. Extending trading beyond 20:00 UTC increases gap risk over the weekend without commensurate opportunity.
How to change in MT5
Reduce the EA session end time from the default 21:00 to 20:00 on event Fridays. Restore to 21:00 the following Monday. Many EAs allow session end time as an input parameter.
XAUUSD EA Settings During
Volatile Market Weeks
Published 15 June 2026 ยท 10 min read
During weeks with NFP, FOMC, or CPI: reduce lot size by 30โ50%, tighten the spread filter, pause the EA 30 minutes before and after each event, and cut the Friday session window short. The goal is to participate in normal trading but insulate against the outsized moves that news events produce on XAUUSD.

Why Volatile Weeks Need Different Settings
Standard EA settings are calibrated for normal market conditions โ the typical 80โ120 pip daily range, spread of 10โ15 pips, and orderly price action between sessions. High-impact events break every one of these assumptions simultaneously:
Spreads widen dramatically during the event window
In the 30 seconds around an NFP or FOMC release, XAUUSD spreads on retail ECN brokers commonly widen to 50โ150 pips. An EA with an 18-pip spread filter would normally block entries here โ but if the filter was not tightened pre-event, the EA might attempt to enter in the 5-minute pre-event window when spreads start widening (from 15 to 20 pips, triggering an entry right before the spike).
Price moves are larger and faster than the EA is designed for
A 100-pip move in 2 minutes produces very different price action than a 100-pip move across a 6-hour session. The EA's breakout detection logic, designed for measured expansion, may fire repeatedly on event-driven noise. Goldie Razor V2.8.4's H4 EMA filter helps here โ it requires the H4 trend to be aligned before entering, which reduces false signals during intraday event chaos.
Stop losses are less reliable during news events
Slippage on stop losses increases significantly during high-impact events. A 30-pip stop loss set in normal conditions may execute at 40โ45 pips during an NFP event due to the speed of price movement. This is not broker manipulation โ it is the nature of a fast market. Reducing lot size is the practical mitigation since you cannot reliably reduce stop loss slippage.
Which Events Require Which Response
| Event | Impact Level | Typical XAUUSD Move | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) | Extreme | 80โ200 pips | Pause 30 min before/after + reduce lot 50% |
| FOMC Rate Decision | Extreme | 100โ250 pips | Pause 30 min before/after + reduce lot 50% |
| US CPI / PPI / PCE | High | 40โ100 pips | Pause 30 min before/after + reduce lot 30% |
| FOMC Minutes | High | 30โ80 pips | Pause 30 min before/after + reduce lot 30% |
| Central Bank Rate Decisions (BOE, ECB) | Medium | 20โ50 pips | Monitor โ tighten spread filter, no lot change needed |
| US Retail Sales / GDP | Medium | 15โ40 pips | Monitor โ spread filter usually handles automatically |

Frequently Asked Questions
Check an economic calendar (Forex Factory, Investing.com) at the start of each week. Look for events flagged as "High Impact" (usually shown in red). Weeks containing NFP, FOMC decisions or minutes, US CPI, PPI, PCE, or central bank rate decisions from major economies require adjustments. A week with 3+ high-impact events in 3 days is the most challenging and may warrant pausing entirely.
It depends on the week. A single high-impact event (e.g. only NFP on Friday) does not necessarily require full pause โ reducing lot size and tightening the spread filter is usually sufficient. Weeks with 3+ high-impact events clustered in 2โ3 days, or any week where two extreme events fall on consecutive days, are often better paused entirely. The revenue you miss is much less than the potential loss from a widened-spread entry into a major news move.
Before the first potential market-moving event of the week โ ideally Sunday evening or Monday morning before the London session opens. Do not wait until the event is hours away; spreads often begin widening and positioning occurs hours before the official release as market participants prepare.
If you realise an event is approaching within 60 minutes: immediately reduce lot size and tighten spread filter. If you are within 30 minutes of the event: disable the EA for 1 hour using the Auto Trading toggle (the button in MT5's toolbar). The EA will automatically resume when you re-enable it. Missing one or two events without adjustment is manageable โ what is not manageable is consistently ignoring event risk across multiple volatile weeks.
Wait at least 24 hours after the last high-impact event of the week. Market conditions often remain elevated for hours after major releases as the full implications are digested. Restoring settings too quickly after an NFP, for example โ right when the Friday post-NFP session begins โ can expose the EA to still-elevated volatility. The safest practice: restore settings the following Monday morning before the London open.
