To put $200B in context: the EUR/USD currency pair โ the world's most traded instrument โ averages approximately $1T per day in OTC volume. Gold at $200B is roughly 20% of EUR/USD volume. Silver at $25B is about 2.5% of EUR/USD volume. This hierarchy directly determines how many professional market makers are willing to quote tight spreads in each market.
The World Gold Council estimates that gold's total trading ecosystem (OTC + futures + ETF creation/redemption + physical) exceeds $500B on active days. Silver's equivalent total is estimated at $50โ80B. The number of active liquidity providers is arguably the most important factor. When 20 LPs compete to quote you the tightest spread on XAUUSD, you benefit from price competition. The London open (8:00am GMT) is the best liquidity window for both metals. Silver's spread typically drops to 15โ25 pips during active London hours and the NY-London overlap (1:00โ5:00pm GMT). This is the viable window for silver strategies. Any EA configured for silver should be restricted to trade only during these hours, with strict session filters.
Gold, by contrast, can be traded from 1:00am GMT onward (when Tokyo and Sydney overlap) with acceptable execution. This broader tradeable window is another practical liquidity advantage โ gold EAs can be configured for wider session windows without execution quality degradation.
The Impact on EA Execution: Why Gold EAs Match Backtests Better
The most frustrating experience in EA trading is a strategy that performs well in backtesting and demo but underperforms on live accounts. The technical term for this divergence is "backtest-to-live gap." One of the primary causes is spread variability โ backtests assume a fixed or modelled spread, while live trading encounters the actual variable spread at the moment of entry.
Gold's spread consistency means the backtest-to-live gap is smaller for XAUUSD EAs. If your backtest models a 12-pip average spread, your live average will be close to that during active sessions. Outlier high-spread moments exist (during FOMC, NFP) but are predictable and can be filtered with news event exclusions. The backtest becomes a reliable predictor of live performance.
Silver's spread variability means the backtest-to-live gap is larger and less predictable. A 25-pip average spread in your backtest might be 20 pips on calm days and 60 pips on active days โ and you cannot always predict which type of day you will face. These silver-specific events are less predictable (they appear on commodity-specific calendars rather than the standard forex economic calendar) and harder to filter programmatically in an EA.

The practical recommendation: develop and validate your strategy on XAUUSD first. Gold's execution consistency means your strategy testing is more reliable. Once you have a proven XAUUSD strategy and understand the market structure, you can evaluate whether silver's higher volatility offers enough additional opportunity to justify adjusting for the wider spread and lower liquidity floor. What Your MT5 Shows You About Liquidity
MetaTrader 5 has several built-in tools that give you real-time liquidity information. The Depth of Market (DOM) panel โ accessed by right-clicking a symbol in Market Watch and selecting "Depth of Market" โ shows the current bid and ask orders at multiple price levels. A thick DOM with large order sizes at multiple levels indicates high liquidity. A thin DOM with small sizes concentrated at only 1โ2 levels indicates thinner liquidity.
The simplest practical test: open XAUUSD and XAGUSD side by side in MT5 during the London session. Observe the spread displayed in the chart corner. The ratio between the two spreads will approximate the liquidity ratio between the markets at that moment. During the London-NY overlap, gold spreads at quality ECN brokers are typically 8โ12 pips; silver spreads are typically 15โ30 pips. The 2โ3ร multiple at peak times can widen to 4โ5ร during off-peak or news periods.
For EA configuration, this has direct implications: gold EAs can use tighter deviation settings (the maximum permitted slippage parameter in MT5) without excessive order rejections.
