Chart Types: The Full Picture
Candlestick Chart
The candlestick chart is the universally accepted standard for all serious XAUUSD trading. Each candle shows opening price, closing price, session high, and session low โ the four data points that define what actually happened in that time period. The body colour (typically green for bullish, red for bearish) immediately communicates the session direction.
For gold specifically, candlestick charts allow traders to see the Asian session range clearly (usually a sequence of small-bodied candles with narrow wicks), identify the London open expansion candle, and track the developing trend through session structure. No other chart type provides this multi-session visibility in a single glance.
Heikin Ashi Chart
Heikin Ashi calculates averaged OHLC values to create smoother-looking candles. A bullish trend appears as a sequence of green candles with minimal lower wicks; a bearish trend as a sequence of red candles with minimal upper wicks. Visually, it makes trends much easier to identify than standard candlesticks.
The critical limitation: Heikin Ashi prices are calculated averages, not actual bid/ask prices. MT5 EAs execute at real market prices. If you backtest an EA using Heikin Ashi chart data, the results will be fictional โ the EA actually used real OHLC prices. This makes Heikin Ashi a display-only tool, not a trading tool.
Renko Chart
Renko charts solve the noise problem by removing the time axis entirely. Each box only forms when price moves a minimum defined amount โ typically 5โ10 pips on XAUUSD. The result is a chart that shows pure price movement without the low-activity clutter that fills candlestick charts during Asian session consolidation.
For gold traders who rely on support and resistance levels, Renko charts reveal structure that is obscured by noise on standard candlesticks. The tradeoff is session awareness โ without a time axis, you cannot know whether a signal formed during the London open (high probability) or Asian session (low probability).
Important: Chart Type Does Not Affect EA Performance
MT5 EAs access raw OHLC price data from the server โ not from the chart display you are looking at. Whether you display candlesticks, Heikin Ashi, or a line chart, the EA sees the same underlying price tick data and executes identically. The chart type you choose is a personal analysis tool only. Goldie Razor V2.8.4, for example, runs on MT5's standard candlestick chart โ but that is simply the conventional display choice, not a requirement for EA function.
