Platform Comparison
The general MT4 vs MT5 debate is well-documented. This is the gold-specific version: how each platform handles XAUUSD symbol quality, tick data for backtesting, hedging mode for gold EAs, and the shifting ecosystem of gold EA development. Eight criteria, gold-focused analysis.
The full MT4 vs MT5 comparison across all features is in our MT4 vs MT5 comparison guide. XAUUSD symbol naming issues are covered separately in our MT5 gold setup guide.

MT4 may be sufficient for your specific use case
If you are not using a gold EA, do not need high-quality backtests, and are not hedging — MT4's differences may not materially affect your results. However, as new gold EAs increasingly require MT5, reassess this annually.
Gold traders are more affected by platform differences than most currency pair traders. The reasons are specific to XAUUSD's characteristics. First, gold's higher volatility makes tick data quality more impactful — a 10-pip interpolation error on EUR/USD backtests is minor; on XAUUSD where 10-pip moves occur multiple times per session, the cumulative impact on backtest accuracy is significant. Second, gold EAs tend to be higher-frequency (5–15 trades/day for session-breakout strategies), meaning execution quality differences compound across many more events per session than a swing trading EA would face.
Third, gold's news sensitivity is exceptional among liquid instruments. Fed meetings, CPI releases, and geopolitical events create intraday moves that are difficult to filter without the MT5 built-in economic calendar. Fourth, the gold EA development ecosystem has shifted toward MT5 more aggressively than for forex pairs — in part because the tick data quality advantage makes strategy validation more reliable on MT5, which gives MT5-developed gold EAs a higher credibility floor.
Backtest quality requirements for gold EAs specifically are explained in our backtest quality guide.
What does the difference between 90% and 99% modelling quality mean in a 2,000-trade gold backtest? Approximately 200 trades in the MT4 90% backtest are simulated using interpolated tick data rather than real historical ticks. These are not randomly distributed — interpolated ticks cluster around periods of thin data, which in XAUUSD means Asian session lows, major news events, and session transitions.
A gold scalping EA that captures London and New York session opens — where volatile, directional moves occur frequently — is precisely the type of strategy most affected by interpolated tick quality. The EA's most important trades (high-volatility, session-open momentum) are the ones where MT4's interpolation introduces the most error.
Practical example: 2,000-trade gold scalping EA backtest
MT4 — 90% Modelling
MT5 — 99% Tick Data
Before configuring any gold EA, verify your broker's exact XAUUSD symbol name in MetaTrader's Market Watch (Ctrl+U to add symbols). This is not optional — the wrong symbol name in your EA's parameters means zero trades will execute.
| Symbol Name | Typical Brokers | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| XAUUSD | IC Markets, Pepperstone, Tickmill, FP Markets | MT4 & MT5 |
| GOLD | Exness, XM, HFM on some account types | MT4 & MT5 |
| XAUUSD.m | Smaller or rebranded ECN brokers | MT4 |
| GOLDm | Some FBS, HotForex account types | MT4 |
| XAUUSDpro | IC Markets Pro accounts in some regions | MT4/MT5 |
| GOLD.cash | Some CFD brokers differentiating spot from futures | MT4 & MT5 |
This table is indicative — always verify your broker's current symbol name before live trading. Brokers can change symbol conventions following platform migrations or account type restructuring.
Migrating your gold EA operation from MT4 to MT5 is a structured process. Attempting it without the right sequence creates unnecessary disruption to a potentially working system.
Get the MT5 version of your EA
Contact your EA developer. If they have an MT5 version, request it — some licenses are platform-agnostic, others require a separate purchase. Do not attempt to run MT4 EA files on MT5.
Select and open MT5 account at your broker
Most established gold brokers (IC Markets, Pepperstone, Tickmill) offer both MT4 and MT5 accounts. Open a new MT5 raw account — do not close your MT4 account until the migration is complete.
Set up VPS for MT5
If you are running your EA on a VPS, confirm your VPS provider supports MT5. Most do, but the installation and configuration process differs slightly from MT4.
Reconfigure EA parameters for MT5 and new broker
Symbol name, point value, and spread-dependent parameters may all need adjustment. Run the EA in Strategy Tester on MT5 with real tick data to confirm parameters produce expected results.
Run demo on MT5 for 2–4 weeks
Before committing live capital, run on MT5 demo at the new broker to verify trade frequency, SL/TP execution, and EA stability match expectations from MT4 operation.
Parallel operation briefly (optional)
If capital allows, run both platforms simultaneously for 2 weeks with conservative lot sizes. This gives direct comparison data and identifies any MT5-specific parameter adjustments needed.
