EA Evaluation

Free vs Paid Trading EAs:
The Honest Industry-Wide Breakdown

18,000+ EAs on MQL5. Prices from $0 to $2,000. No reliable way to distinguish quality from marketing at first glance. This is the framework that applies to every EA across every instrument — the price tier reality, what development actually costs, and the five verification checks that matter regardless of price.

The XAUUSD-specific version of this comparison is in our XAUUSD free vs paid guide. Evaluating track record documentation specifically is explained in our EA documentation guide.

Sensible EA budget range$125–$250
Track record standard: 6+ months live real-money
Support level: Email support, 48–72h response
Update frequency: Every 3–6 months minimum

Budget calculated at 5% of account size for moderate risk profile. Higher return targets (8%+) require EAs with more trading activity — verify this aligns with the documented strategy frequency before purchasing.

What Development Actually Costs — And Why It Explains Price Tiers

An EA is not just code — it is code plus research plus infrastructure plus support. Understanding what each component costs explains why the pricing tiers exist in the first place.

Strategy research

40–80 hours

Identifying a genuine edge in historical data, validating it is not over-fitted, developing the logic that will become the EA rules.

MQL5 development

20–60 hours

Writing the code, handling edge cases, implementing risk management, parameter structure, and error handling.

Tick-data backtesting

$50–$200 in server costs

Running 99% quality backtests over 3+ years of data requires server resources, particularly for high-frequency gold strategies with thousands of trades.

Forward testing period

3–6 months of time

Out-of-sample validation on a live or demo account. This is time the developer cannot monetise the EA. It represents opportunity cost.

Ongoing support

2–5 hours/week

Responding to user questions, updating for broker or platform changes, monitoring for strategy degradation in changing market conditions.

MQL5 marketplace fee

30% of each sale

MQL5 retains 30% of every transaction. A $199 EA nets the developer $139 per sale before time and infrastructure costs.

The implication: a properly developed EA with research, backtesting, forward testing, and the first year of support easily represents 200+ developer hours before a single sale. At a consulting rate of $50–$100/hour, the break-even on development costs for a $199 EA requires 140–300 sales. Most EA listings never reach this volume. Free EAs, by definition, must recoup costs through a different mechanism — which is why the "free EA as generosity" framing is almost always inaccurate.

The MQL5 Marketplace Reality: 18,000+ EAs and What That Actually Means

MQL5's marketplace had over 18,000 Expert Advisors listed as of 2025. This number sounds like abundance. In practice, it is a signal-to-noise problem. Analysis of the marketplace reveals:

  • ~85% have no verified live trading record of any kind. Their marketing material is backtests, screenshots of backtests, or statements about future performance.
  • Average time since last update: 14 months. Most EAs on the marketplace are effectively abandoned. The developer published, received a few sales, then moved on.
  • Review manipulation is widespread. New accounts posting immediate 5-star reviews, groups of reviews all appearing within the same 48-hour window, and responses to critical reviews that attack the reviewer rather than address the criticism are all common patterns.
  • Backtest cherry-picking is the norm, not the exception. A backtest covering only 2020–2021 (gold bull market) will show any long-only gold EA looking exceptional. The same EA run on 2022 (Fed rate hike cycle, gold declining) would show very different results.

The free scalping bot comparison specifically — how free vs paid plays out for scalping instruments — is in our scalping bot cost guide. The verification framework that applies across all tiers starts with the five non-negotiable checks in the next section.

The 5 Non-Negotiable Verification Checks for Any EA

These five checks apply equally to a $0 free EA and a $999 professional system. An EA that fails any of them requires a compelling explanation before it earns real money.

01

Live real-money track record

Ask for a Myfxbook or equivalent link. Verify: is it real money (not demo)? Is the account at a recognisable broker? Is the history complete (not filtered)? Is it at least 6 months old?

02

Strategy description in plain language

The developer should be able to explain in 3 sentences: what signal generates the entry, what filter prevents bad entries, and what exit logic closes the trade. "Proprietary algorithm" without further detail is not an acceptable answer.

03

Backtest with realistic conditions

Backtest must cover at minimum 2020–2023 (different market regimes). Spread should match real ECN spread for the instrument. Backtest on MT5 with tick data is the gold standard — MT4 90% modelling quality backtests are insufficient for strategy validation.

04

Active developer

When did the EA last receive an update? Is there a public changelog? Can you contact the developer and get a response within 48 hours before purchasing? An inactive developer means an orphaned EA.

05

No guaranteed return claims

Any EA claiming a guaranteed return, "99% win rate," or specific monthly profit percentage is either dishonest or operating a martingale/high-risk system that will eventually blow the account. These claims are regulatorily unacceptable and practically dishonest.

The Lifecycle Comparison: Free vs Paid EA Longevity

Free EAs have an average lifespan of 8–14 months from publication to effective abandonment. This is based on the average time-since-last-update for free MQL5 listings and the observable pattern of developer attention. Paid EAs at the mid-range and professional tiers show significantly longer active development windows — typically 24–36+ months for EAs with established user bases that generate ongoing sales to fund support.

The practical consequence is that a free EA you start using today may have no broker-compatibility update in 12 months when your broker changes their execution model. It may have no fix when MetaTrader releases a platform update that breaks a specific API call the EA relies on. Paid EAs at reputable developers are maintained because failing to maintain them means losing future sales and reputation.

The total cost of ownership concept matters here: an EA that cost $0 but produced losing trades for 8 months before being abandoned has a very different — and typically much higher — real cost than a $299 EA with 3 years of active development and a verified profitable track record.

When to Build vs Buy at Each Price Tier

Building your own EA versus buying one is a question of comparative advantage. If you have MQL5 development skills, the time to build, and the capacity to run forward testing — building gives you complete strategy transparency and zero ongoing licensing cost. But most retail traders do not have all three. For them, buying is more efficient.
