What Broker Should I Use
for Gold EA Trading?
The decision process, the 30-day demo test protocol, and the 10 questions that separate an EA-ready broker from one that will cost you money.
Published 15 June 2026 ยท Updated quarterly
For gold EA trading, you need a broker that offers MT5 with XAUUSD, explicitly allows EAs, has an ECN or raw spread account with XAUUSD spreads under 20 pips during peak hours, supports VPS hosting, and has hedging mode enabled. Run the 10-question checklist below against your current or prospective broker. A score of 8/10 or above is the minimum for EA trading.
My Broker Decision Checklist
Answer these 10 questions about your current or prospective broker. Be honest โ partial answers cost you money in live trading.
Does my broker offer MT5 with XAUUSD (Gold)?
Not all MT5 brokers offer XAUUSD as a tradable instrument. Verify that XAUUSD appears in the MT5 Market Watch and that it is available for automated trading, not just manual.
Are Expert Advisors (EAs) explicitly allowed?
Some brokers technically allow EAs but have terms prohibiting "high-frequency trading" or "scalping" โ which can be invoked to void profits or close accounts. Check the terms of service before depositing.
Is an ECN or raw spread account available?
Raw ECN accounts pass interbank spreads directly to you (typically 0โ5 pips on XAUUSD at peak hours) plus a fixed commission. Standard accounts mark up the spread (often adding 10โ30 pips). For scalping EAs, ECN is significantly more cost-effective.
Is the average XAUUSD spread under 20 pips on ECN?
During London/NY session peak hours, a quality ECN broker should average 8โ18 pips on XAUUSD. Spreads above 25 pips during peak hours indicate poor liquidity access. Test this on demo during the session you trade.
Does the broker support VPS hosting (or offer one)?
Many EA-friendly brokers offer free or discounted VPS hosting co-located with their servers โ reducing latency to near-zero. Even if they do not offer it directly, confirm their servers are compatible with common VPS providers at NY4 or LD4.
Is hedging mode supported on MT5?
MT5 offers two position accounting modes: netting (one position per symbol) and hedging (multiple positions per symbol in opposite directions). Most XAUUSD EAs require hedging mode enabled. Not all brokers offer this.
Does the demo account match live server conditions?
Some brokers run demo accounts on separate servers with artificially tight spreads and perfect fills. Your 30-day demo test is meaningless if demo conditions do not reflect live execution. Ask the broker explicitly.
Are withdrawals processed within 3 business days?
Fast, reliable withdrawals indicate a well-capitalised, legitimate broker. Withdrawal delays beyond 5 business days without explanation are a red flag โ especially in a regulated environment where processing should be straightforward.
Is there a responsive live chat support channel?
When your EA has a connection issue at 7:45am GMT (just before London open), you need support that can respond in minutes, not days. Test the support channel before depositing โ response time and quality reveal a lot.
Are there no restrictions on scalping or high-frequency trading?
Check for minimum trade duration requirements (some brokers require trades to be open for at least 1 or 2 minutes), restrictions on order modification frequency, and any fair use policy language that could be applied to EA trading.

The 30-Day Demo Test Protocol
Passing the checklist is necessary but not sufficient. The 30-day demo test is how you verify what the broker claims versus what actually happens in execution.
Baseline measurement
- โRun your EA on demo, recording every trade fill price vs expected price
- โLog XAUUSD spread at open of each trade (screenshot or EA log)
- โNote execution time from order send to confirmation
- โCheck for any requotes or partial fills
News event testing
- โRun the EA through at least one NFP or CPI release
- โDocument spread behaviour during and after the release
- โCheck if your spread filter blocked entries correctly during the spike
- โNote any connection interruptions or platform freezes
Decision and live start
- โCompare demo performance with expectations based on backtest
- โCalculate average slippage per trade (actual fill vs expected)
- โIf slippage exceeds 3โ5 pips regularly, consider a different broker
- โIf results are consistent: go live at minimum lot size (0.01) for 2 more weeks
What You Cannot Compromise On
Some broker requirements are nice-to-have. These five are non-negotiable for any XAUUSD EA. Goldie Razor V2.8.4, as an M15 breakout EA, specifically requires that questions 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 from the checklist above are all answered yes โ these represent the minimum viable broker configuration for MT5 breakout EA operation.
MT5 with XAUUSD
Non-negotiable. No MT5 or no XAUUSD = EA cannot run.
EAs explicitly permitted
Hidden restrictions in ToS can void profits. Get it in writing.
ECN account available
Standard account spread markup on scalping trades is death by a thousand cuts.
VPS-compatible servers
24/5 uptime is impossible from a home PC. VPS is not optional.
Hedging mode on MT5
Many EAs require hedging. Without it, the EA cannot open opposing positions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Raw ECN or STP account with commission-based pricing rather than spread markup. This gives you the tightest spreads during London and NY sessions, which directly impacts scalping EA profitability. A standard account with a 30-pip markup on XAUUSD can turn a profitable EA into a losing one.
Minimum 30 days, covering a full range of market conditions. Critically: test during high-volatility news events (NFP, CPI, FOMC) to see how spreads, slippage, and execution behave. Run the same EA on demo for 30 days, then compare expected results against actual fills to assess execution quality.
Some prop firms allow EAs, others do not. Critically, prop firms typically have drawdown limits (daily and total) that interact with EA behaviour โ a 5% daily drawdown limit combined with an EA that averages 3% per day in volatile sessions creates constant risk of account breach. Verify all trading rules before purchasing a prop firm challenge.
The broker's server location matters. A broker with servers in London (LD4) or New York (NY4) data centres will have lower latency when you co-locate your VPS in the same facility. Latency of 1โ5ms versus 50ms can affect fill quality, especially for scalping EAs that depend on precision entry timing.
Yes, but test first. The 30-day demo protocol applies. Start with minimum lot size (0.01) for at least the first 2 weeks in live to observe real execution quality before increasing exposure. A broker that executes well on demo and badly on live is a frequent complaint โ the live test at minimum lot is essential.
