Quick Answer
For most traders on ECN accounts, breakout EAs offer the best balance of activity, spread tolerance, and robustness. Scalping EAs require very tight spreads. Trend EAs need large capital and patience. Low-frequency snipers suit quality-over-quantity traders. Grid EAs should be avoided.

How Each Archetype Behaves During Common Gold Market Conditions
XAUUSD spends time in three broad conditions: trending (directional moves of 200+ pips), ranging (price oscillating in a 50โ150 pip band), and news-driven spikes (sharp 50โ200 pip moves within minutes). Each archetype responds differently to each condition.
Trending market
Scalping
Neutral โ short targets captured quickly but trend EAs outperform
Breakout
Strong โ breakouts confirm and follow direction
Trend
Best conditions
Grid
Very dangerous โ averaging into a trend can compound rapidly
Low-freq
Good โ high-quality confirmations trigger
Ranging market
Scalping
Good โ frequent reversals from range edges
Breakout
Mixed โ false breakouts common, needs good filter
Trend
Difficult โ no entries or repeated stopped-out longs
Grid
Appears to work โ catches mean reversions
Low-freq
Difficult โ strict confirmations rarely trigger
News spike
Scalping
Poor โ spread widens, slippage, fills at bad prices
Breakout
Caution โ spread filter required to avoid news entries
Trend
Usually safe โ stops wide enough to survive
Grid
Catastrophic โ spike triggers multiple grid levels
Low-freq
Usually avoids โ conditions rarely align during noise
How to Match Account Size to EA Archetype
Lot sizing is the variable that links account size to risk. Any EA archetype can be run at 0.01 lots, but the minimum practical account size differs because of margin requirements and the psychological reality of drawdown.
A scalping EA running at 0.01 lots needs enough margin buffer to absorb its typical drawdown without closing positions โ on a $200 account, even a 10-pip drawdown on 0.01 lots is only $1, but spread costs accumulate with 20 trades per day. The real minimum is determined by how many consecutive losing trades the EA can have, multiplied by the average loss in dollar terms.
Trend EAs have a different constraint: they may go 3โ4 weeks without a trade during ranging phases. On a smaller account, traders tend to second-guess the EA and turn it off โ missing the trend that eventually comes. Trend EAs work better on accounts where the trader can afford to be patient, which typically correlates with larger account sizes.
