The prop firm business model is more aligned with the trader than it first appears. Prop firms make money from two sources: challenge fees and a share of profitable traders’ earnings. This means they are actively incentivised to have profitable traders on their books — the more profitably you trade, the more the firm earns on its split.
Challenge fees are the immediate, reliable revenue. A firm with thousands of challenge applicants earns predictably from fees regardless of whether individuals pass. But the scale-up model means a consistently profitable trader who grows to a $200k allocation, earning 5% monthly, generates $2,000/month in profit split for the firm — recurring revenue that far exceeds a one-time challenge fee. Both parties benefit from the trader succeeding.
EA configuration for passing a prop firm challenge is in our prop firm EA guide.
Understanding the drawdown mathematics prevents the most common challenge failure — accidentally hitting the daily drawdown limit:
$5,000 account
Daily limit (5%): $250
Overall limit (10%): $500
Suggested lots: 0.01
Value per pip: ~$1.00
250 trades before daily limit
$10,000 account
Daily limit (5%): $500
Overall limit (10%): $1,000
Suggested lots: 0.01
Value per pip: ~$1.00
500 trades before daily limit
$25,000 account
Daily limit (5%): $1,250
Overall limit (10%): $2,500
Suggested lots: 0.02
Value per pip: ~$2.00
625 trades before daily limit
The risk is not the strategy losing — it is inappropriate lot sizing relative to the account. Configure your EA with 0.01 lots per $1,000 account balance as the starting point, then reduce further if the EA’s maximum drawdown in backtesting approaches 5%. The lot sizing calculations for funded account capital are in our lot size guide.
Some prop firms have a “consistency rule” — a cap on how much of total profits can come from a single trading day (typically 30–40% maximum). This rule is designed to prevent lucky single-day windfalls masquerading as consistent trading skill.
For EA traders, this rule is naturally complied with. Session-based EAs like Goldie Sniper trade many smaller positions throughout the session rather than one large concentrated position. The daily P&L curve is more evenly distributed — which is exactly what the consistency rule rewards.
EAs also don’t “go for it” on high-conviction days — they execute the same parameters regardless. This eliminates the behaviour that most triggers consistency rule violations in human traders: dramatically increasing lot size when they feel confident, producing one outsized winning day that the rule then flags.
| Allocation | 5% Monthly | 80% Split | Monthly Income | Annual Income |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $500 | $400 | $400 | $4,800 |
| $25,000 | $1,250 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $12,000 |
| $50,000 | $2,500 | $2,000 | $2,000 | $24,000 |
| $100,000 | $5,000 | $4,000 | $4,000 | $48,000 |

Conservative lot sizing
Critical0.01 lots per $1,000 account (maximum). Adjust lower if EA has historically wide drawdown. The daily limit will kill your challenge before the strategy does if lot size is too high.
Spread filter
CriticalSet maximum spread to 15–20 pips for XAUUSD. Prevents entries during news spikes when spreads widen to 50+ pips, which would blow the entry price and potentially hit the daily drawdown limit on a single bad fill.
News filter / pause
RequiredMost firms require pausing 30 minutes before and after major news (NFP, FOMC, CPI). Check the firm's specific rules. Manual pause is acceptable; automated news API filters are cleaner.
Daily maximum loss
RecommendedSet an absolute daily loss limit in the EA (if available) at 80% of the firm's daily drawdown limit. This creates an automatic stop before the firm's rule is hit, with a 20% buffer for any last trade that completes while approaching the limit.
