A gold EA can operate at $100 — technically. The caveats: the spread cost as a percentage of profit target is disproportionately high at micro lot sizing (50% of a 20-pip target consumed by 10-pip spread), absolute returns are trivially small ($2–5/month from a good month), and the psychological challenge of tiny absolute gains and losses creates risk management pressure that is more subtle but equally dangerous as the technical constraints.

Margin Requirements: The Leverage Equation

Margin is the deposit required by your broker to hold a position. On XAUUSD, margin is calculated as: (Lot size in ounces × Gold price × Contract size) ÷ Leverage. At current gold prices (~$2,400/oz), 0.01 lot on most platforms = 1 ounce of gold. Required margin = $2,400 ÷ leverage.

At 1:500 leverage: $2,400 ÷ 500 = $4.80 margin per 0.01 lot. A $100 account can hold up to ~20 simultaneous 0.01 lot positions before margin call (in pure margin terms, ignoring floating losses). In practice, with floating losses on some positions, the effective maximum is 8–12 simultaneous positions at 1:500 — far more than any sensible EA requires.

At 1:50 leverage (US CFTC limit for precious metals): $2,400 ÷ 50 = $48 margin per 0.01 lot. Two simultaneous positions = $96 margin on a $100 account, leaving only $4 free margin — effectively at margin call risk from any small adverse price movement. This is the critical leverage threshold: below 1:100 leverage, a $100 gold EA account becomes operationally very constrained. Position Sizing at $100: The Correct Math

On XAUUSD, pip value at 0.01 lot is approximately $0.10 (this varies slightly with gold price). A 20-pip stop loss at 0.01 lot = $2.00 risk per trade. On a $100 account, this is exactly 2% — the upper bound of recommended risk per trade for conservative EA trading.

This means 0.01 lot with 20-pip SL is NOT conservative — it is correct sizing at $100. Going larger (0.02 lot, 20-pip SL = $4 = 4% risk) is already above the recommended range. The Spread Cost Problem at Micro Lots

The spread cost proportionality issue at $100 (micro lot) is real and worth understanding clearly. At 0.01 lot, every pip of spread cost = $0.10. A 10-pip total execution cost (ECN spread + commission) = $1.00 per trade. Against a 20-pip take profit = $2.00 gross profit, the spread consumes 50% of potential gross profit.

This does not make a $100 EA account unviable — it means the effective RR on a 20-pip target with 10-pip spread is 1:1 after costs (if SL is also 20 pips). A strategy with a 55% win rate and 1:1 effective RR has positive expectancy: 0.55 × 1 − 0.45 × 1 = 0.10 expected profit per pip risked. Profitable, but less attractive than the gross 1:2 RR the strategy targets.

The spread proportionality problem resolves as lot size increases. At 0.10 lot, 10-pip spread = $1.00 still, but against a $20 profit target it is only 5% — minimal. This is one of the structural reasons that EA trading becomes progressively more profitable (in absolute terms and proportionally) as account size grows. A typical challenge: pay $100–$200 entry fee, demonstrate 8–10% profit target on a $5,000–$10,000 simulated account within 30 days, with maximum 5–10% drawdown rules. Pass: receive a funded account at the same or larger size. The EA runs the same strategy on XAUUSD — but on a $10,000 account instead of $100.
